Case Study

I had the pleasure of consulting on a project with a company that creates training for people with disabilities.

My Role

In my role as a consultant, I undertook the responsibility of meticulously reviewing the content generated by the company, offering insightful notes on potential enhancements. Subsequently, I would share a hard copy of these notes to SMEs and other team members in advance of our scheduled meetings.

During our collaborative sessions, I would present my suggestions and modifications, sparking engaging group discussions. To further enrich these conversations, I posed additional questions and refined my ideas through on-the-spot edits.

My Process

To initiate my workflow, I conducted a thorough review of all materials, encompassing Vyond videos and website content. Subsequently, I revisited the content for a second time, diligently noting potential improvements and articulating the underlying rationale for each suggested change. The modifications I advocated for were tied to various learning theories. For example, guided by my knowledge of the coherence principle from Mayer’s 12 Principles of Multimedia Learning, I discerned which visuals had extraneous information that needed to be omitted.

Furthermore, I created specific objectives for each lesson, aligning them with the desired outcomes we aimed for learners to accomplish by the conclusion of each session. Additionally, I curated an ongoing repository of questions designed for a comprehensive quiz, strategically positioned at the conclusion of all instructional activities. Ensuring seamless cohesion, I meticulously aligned the identified objectives with the quiz questions, fostering a cohesive and effective learning experience.

Takeaways

I enjoyed collaborating with this company, channeling my fervor for special needs to elevate a project dedicated to a population close to my heart. The opportunity to work alongside accomplished scientists and other professionals was very enriching. While many project collaborators were SMEs, I drew upon my background as a special education teacher, seamlessly integrating my instructional design expertise. I hope to engage in similar, impactful projects throughout my career.
